The change “back” to home team wearing dark sweaters started in the 2003-04 season (i.e. the season prior to the lockout year).

Not that it matters, but home teams wore dark sweaters until 1970; it was only starting in 1970 that teams started wearing white sweaters at home.

    Ancient news.

It was with the advent of the 3rd jerseys which are all dark. Home teams then had the option of two jerseys at home and the visiting teams only had to bring one set of jerseys on road trips.

to increase sales of one of the jerseys.

Ancient days it used to be that way and then they altered. Today, since the lock out it was altered back to dark at home when the went with a 3rd jersey which are dark colored. This also made things simpler for traveling teams to only have to worry about 1 jersey while on the road. Plus, with the addition of the 3rd jersey it promoted more sales for clubs at home to sell merchandise. Basically, it comes down to the almighty dollar and revenue for the teams.

The authoritative answer from the NHL was that so the fans could see the visitors other jerseys…..Bullhockey. It was a ploy to sell more jerseys. “Oh you had a home jersey and now it’s an away jersey? for x amount of dollars you can have the home one now.” Hopefully the NHL goes back to the home whites…..getting tired of the Red Wings Home Reds. I always loved the whites.
