There is just one thing you need to consider. I'm in college right now working on becoming a teacher, and you really need to make sure that you're interested in teaching students, not just the coaching aspect. It won't be fun for you or the kids if you teach only to coach. I did have a couple coaches in high school for soccer who weren't teachers though, they just knew the head coach who was a teacher. If you have some teaching connections and there are open coaching spots look into that in your future also. For coaching high school field hockey, yea, teaching is probably your best bet.
