How does the minor league hockey system work?
Players get called up from the minor leagues and sent back down just like in baseball. However, some of the minor leagues in hockey are actually considered semi-professional leagues. Were leagues such as the AHL and ECHL established independently of the NHL and they have some sort of transfer agreement for players? How exactly does it work?
How does the NHL-AHL-ECHL agreement work? Can the AHL sign their own players and send them to the ECHL?
Or can the NHL assign players to both leauges? I know the NHL can send 86% of the roster to the AHL, do either the AHL or NHL have a similiar deal with the ECHL, where ECHL teams have affiliated players and free agents?

How exactly does the NHL draft picks work?
Now that Edmonton has officially finished last in the NHL, are they guarantee the 1st overall pick in the upcoming draft?
I heard TSN say they have a 48% chance of getting it.

I always thought that if you finished last in the NHL, you are guarantee the 1st overall pick.
Anyone care to explain that to me?
How does players coming out of an NHL draft work?
Once a player is drafted, what happens? Do they have a choice as to what they do? For example, I see some junior players who have already been drafted but still play in the juniors, I see some who choose to go to university, some who get sent to the AHL, and a few who go straight to the NHL. Also, is it like the players can do what they want but the team that drafts them owns their rights?
