Bob – I’ve seen both definitions…………3 uninterrupted goals in a game (regardless of periods) and 3 uninterrupted goals in a period. I usually use the 3 in a game because that’s the one I see used more often.
After glancing through 6 years worth of summaries (all I have on hand), the only natural hat tricks by rookies are Mueller’s last year, Ryan’s last month and Stamkos last nighttime. Very few rookie hat tricks in the 4-5 years chief up to the lockout as well compared to since the lockout.
Turns out that Bobby Carpenter also had a natural hat trick as a rookie, as I just found out that Stamkos is the 2nd youngest player in NHL history to record a natural hat trick….Carpenter was the only one younger.
So….that makes 4
Too terrible that Steve Downie chose fight Byfuglien after a clean open ice hit attempt. Guarantee you that if that fight doesn’t take place, the Lightning win that game. That is what separates the elite teams from the bottom of the barrel teams. Elite teams have players who know when to pick a fight. 1 minute left in the 2nd period with a 2 goal lead is not one of those times. Especially after a routine CLEAN hit attempt. If I was a TB fan, I would be really pissed at Downie. No doubt he cost them the game. The announcers praised him for it and said he’ll win points in the lockerroom for it… somehow I don’t see that happening now.
I know Bobby Ryan had one last month against LA, and Byfuglien had one last season against Phoenix. His were all in the first period

Laying Low – Dustin wasn’t a rookie last year. His rookie year was 2005-06 when he played 25 games and he played a handful in 06-07 as well (9).
Kate – neither Brunnstrom nor Staal’s rookie hat tricks were natural. Staal’s goals were the 1st, 3rd, and 11th of the game while Brunny’s were the 5th, 7th, and 9th.
Dewman – you’re dead on. Huge momentum shift for Chicago, and Krajicek’s interference penalty early in the 3rd just compounded it.
