It wasn’t nearly as high as this past Olympics. It wasn’t until 1998 that Canada starting expecting Olympic hockey gold.

Elizabeth Manley had the pressure of a nation in the 88 games.

Nothing at all like this year. There were players with NHL experience (Andy Moog and Mats Naslund come to mind) but for the most part – it was just amateurs. (although in the case of the Russians, many were NHL calibre are made the jump soon thereafter. Talking here about guys like Larionov, Markov, Fetisov, Mogilny (others like Kasatonov and Mylinkov had less accomplishment)

There was really a fantastic deal of pressure on the 1988 Olympic Team (similar to this year’s team if you question Bob Nicholson (the only executive memeber of both the 1988 and 2010 Canadian Olympic Teams)).

The team consisted of several players with NHL experience (14 in all) with the hope of bringing home the gold on Canadian soil. The team had won both the Izvestia Cup (against the same Russians and Czechs playing in the Olympics) and the Spengler during a 24 day span in late December and early October and people probable them to win.. Members of the 1988 team included 3x Stanley Cup champions Andy Moog and Randy Gregg as well as local hero Jim Peplinski.

Bronz – Elizabeth Manley had no pressure – Brian Orser was the figure skater with all the pressure.
