How does players coming out of an NHL draft work?

Once a player іѕ drafted, whаt happens? Dο thеу hаνе a сhοісе аѕ tο whаt thеу dο? Fοr example, I see ѕοmе junior players whο hаνе already bееn drafted bυt still play іn thе juniors, I see ѕοmе whο point out tο gο tο university, ѕοmе whο gеt sent tο thе AHL, аnd a few whο gο straight tο thе NHL. Alѕο, іѕ іt lіkе thе players саn dο whаt thеу want bυt thе team thаt drafts thеm owns thеіr rights?

It depends. The team can’t make decisions to where they play until they really sign them. Then they make their choice based on what they reckon is best for his development.
Also, if a player is drafted when he is first eligible, the AHL is not an option, he must either return to Junior or remain in the NHL.
I judge a team has one year to ink a player to a contract, the exception being if he is staying in College, they still own his rights.
LITY can add alot I am sure.

It depends where they were playing in the season previous to they were drafted and the age at which they were drafted.
With a player from the CHL who still has CHL eligibility the team has two choices either he plays in the NHL or he returns to the CHL. If he has completed his CHL eligibility (either by age or the Spezza rule) the team can play him in the minors likely the AHL.
With a player with NCAA eligibility he plays in the NHL or he returns to school. Simple.
Other players the team has options of returning him to the league from which he came, playing in the minors, optioning him to the CHL or to an NCAA team in rare circumstances.
The player has no choice in the matter. Once he cryptogram a contract he plays where the team puts him. Until he cryptogram a contract his only choices are again limited. A hockey player is chattel and nothing more.

I judge with the new CBA that it’s three years of rights when they go back to college or juniors and an extension when they go over to Europe and when the provision of time has run up the player because a free agent and is not bound by rookie pay rules. But, teams can keep in contact with the player at all times and try to initiate signing them to 2-way deals, where they can get payed by the AHL club and still play on the NHL club, or signing them to NHL deals that allow them to be dropped to the AHL. In the event that they become free agents, the drafting club loses their exclusive negotiating rights and they are free to seek monetary compensation from any club in the NHL.
