The arena is nicknamed (and built to resemble) “The Igloo,” which are commonly associated with the cold north and penguins. But, there are NO penguins in the arctic, only in antartica. And there are very few igloos in antartica since people are not allowed to live there for anything other than research purposes. So, to answer your question, there is absolutely no correlation between Pittsburgh, Penguins and Igloos. In fact, the only reason that pittsburgh’s team is named the penguins is that this was chosen as the winner of a contest to pick a name for the franchise.
jack mcgregor’s wife was a huge pittsburgh hockey fan. when they built the new arena (mellon arena) the nickname was the igloo. even even if penguins don’t live in igloos… it was what Mrs. Mcgregor thought would be a excellent name for the team… they were orgiionally called the pirates but pirates don’t live in igloos… Also… you shouldn’t complain… would you rather them be called the Pittsburgh People who live in Igloos?
