Atlanta entrepreneur and philanthropist, Bill Evans, has made a career out of giving back to his community. Many of his business ventures involve charitable contributions, but Bill has always dreamed of one day taking his passion for helping others to the extreme. He and his business partner Craig Forney are taking on the challenge of playing 50 golf courses in 50 states in 50 days as an extreme fund-raising event. They will leave their families behind and put their businesses on hold to fulfill their quest to raise awareness about the importance of early detection for melanoma, breast and prostate cancer.
"Yes, we know people affected by cancer. A friend of mine just had his 7th surgery to remove melanoma tumors growing all over the inside of his body. But we aren't doing this tour because of our personal stories. We are doing this because everyone is affected by these types of cancer and we want to make sure people realize if they catch it early enough, it's treatable. If we don't raise a dime, but saved one life, it will be well worth it," says Bill, co-founder if The 50 in 50 tour.
Bill finds his motivation by taking on challenges others say are impossible. Many people told him the idea of playing 50 rounds of golf in 50 days in 50 states in 50 days could never be done. Bill is determined to prove that anything is possible and that one person truly can make a difference. He knows the demanding schedule will be exhausting and that inclement weather may slow them down, but rain or shine, he will be ready to play.
Bill says, "Cancer doesn't wait for good weather, so why should we? No complaints are allowed on this trip. I don't think it is fair for us to complain knowing the pain and suffering cancer patients endure every day."
Bill is already thinking of ways to make the extreme fund-raising event bigger and better next year. He and Craig have plans to play at 50 golf resorts across the country next year and 50 private courses the following year. With a documentary in the making, a book underway, media coverage and sponsorships, Bill believes The 50 in 50 golf tour has the potential to make a life changing impact on local communities across the country!
Craig Forney has been one of the lucky few who have made a successful career out of the game of golf. His love of the game started at an early age and continues to motivate him on and off the course. As a PGA professional, golf course owner, developer of the Nuclear Golf teaching system and father of three, Craig still finds time to take on new challenges. Being the co-founder of The 50 in 50 extreme fund-raising campaign, Craig will play 50 rounds of golf in 50 states in 50 days with his Atlanta business partner and friend Bill Evans. The goal is to raise one million dollars to fund research and prevention programs for melanoma, breast and prostrate cancer.
"These are three of the most treatable forms of cancer and if detected early enough, patients can survive. We don't need to wait for someone to die to create a foundation or a cause. Our mission is to prevent that from happening by being proactive and not waiting until it's too late", explains Craig.
Craig has been instrumental in scheduling the stops along the tour and says most of the golf course managers are excited to have the opportunity to participate. Craig and Bill decided to do the inaugural 50 in 50 extreme fund-raising event at public golf courses across the country to giving everyone the opportunity to come out and show their support.
Craig and Bill will travel and sleep in an RV, play an average of 4 hours of golf per day and will spend the rest of their time visiting local cancer hospitals. Stories of the patients and families they meet will be shared in a documentary, in daily blogs and in a book that will chronicle the 50 day expedition.
Craig says the most difficult part of the trip will be not seeing his family for two months, but he knows it will be a small sacrifice in order to make an impact on hundreds if not thousand of other lives. He believes this mission sets a great example for his own children and his community.
